About this episode

Leaders Need To Be More Like Coaches

Today’s show its the last in a three-part series with former rugby player Aidan McCullen who these days is an executive coach, host of the weekly podcast, the ‘Innovation Show’ and author of new book ‘Undisruptable’.

Last week we talked about discipline versus talent, manifestation and positive thinking as well as his own very successful professional playing career and how that has helped shape a lot of his current thinking.
This week we get into subjects like feedback – both giving and receiving it, communication, mentoring and teaching yourself to be open to a reinvention mindset and what that actually means, but we start today’s show talking about failure and using the Japanese idea of Kintsugi thinking

Aidan McCullen was born in Ireland on the 5th of January 1977. When his family moved to Dublin from rural County Meath, McCullen attended Castleknock College, where his rugby career began. He played for the under 19s and 20s before being selected to represent Ireland in the under 21s.

In 1998 McCullen joined the French side US Dax, who played in the French first division before returning to Ireland in 1999 to play for Lansdowne Football Club in the all-Ireland league. He joined Leinster Rugby in 2001, where he enjoyed 60 caps for the team and 15 international caps. The pursuit of excellence in Rugby Union was his passion for many years, and he played for the Irish national team in the Hong Kong Sevens and the Rugby World Cup in 2001. After a period of injury in 2005, he joined another French side Toulouse, who were one of the most elite teams in the game. He finished his rugby career with a few years at London Irish until he retired from the game in 2008.

In 2016 McCullen launched a new podcast called the Innovation Show. The podcast focuses on new thinking, unique ideas and sharing ways for people to lead more fulfilled lives. With more than 290 episodes released, the show boasts Bill Gates amongst its listeners and regularly features on RTÉ (Ireland’s national broadcaster). In 2017 McCullen was invited to lecture at Trinity College Dublin, where he still delivers a module on emerging technology trends.

Today, McCullen is a speaker, broadcaster, author and entrepreneur. He has worked with many global clients, including MasterCard, Google, Epic Games and Toyota, helping them facilitate change within their organisations.

In March 2021, he published his first book ‘Undisruptable: A Mindset of Permanent Reinvention for Individuals, Organisations and Life’. In the book, he explores how we can all harness change to our advantage. He provides tools and techniques to help forge a mindset primed for continuous reinvention.
