How Putting Your Plate Away Can Lead To The Team Scoring More Goals
It’s the second part of the chat I had, walking through Richmond Park in south London, with Olympic Silver Medallist and England and Team GB Rugby Sevens Captain at both the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games, Tom Mitchell.
In this second part, we discuss building values from day one, putting time into relationships, confidence and lack of it and life after professional sport, but we started by speaking about how do you convince an athlete that filling in a questionnaire or turning up on time for a meeting is eventually going to help you win the game or win the tournament.
Mitchell was born in Cuckfield, West Sussex, in 1989. He attended Worth boarding school in West Sussex. As a young man, Mitchell had a passion for rugby, and while studying at Oxford, he was selected for the Oxford University team in 2011. He scored Oxford’s third try in their varsity match against Cambridge, which saw them win 28-10 over their rivals.
His England debut came at the 2012 Wellington Sevens part of the IRB Sevens World Series hosted in Wellington, New Zealand. He went on to become the leading scorer in the 2013-2014 World Series, where he scored 358 points. His impact was seen as instrumental in getting England to finish in 4th position. An injury forced Mitchell to take a rehabilitation break when he fractured his leg and dislocated his ankle during a 2014-15 Sevens World Series game.
In 2016 he was selected as captain for the Rugby Sevens team representing Great Britain in the Rio Olympics. The team won a coveted silver medal through a series of high-quality performances that saw them compete against Fiji in the gold medal match.
His senior career has continued as a member of the London Royals team from 2020 onwards. He also captained the Rugby Sevens side for Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games that took place in August 2021. Though the side did not make it onto the podium, the team was praised for their determination to compete at the games despite all the obstacles a global pandemic presented.
