Podcast 18 | Ben chats with Jeremy Snape about all things sports psychology. Jeremy is a successful international and county level cricketer turned performance coach and sports psychologist.
Snape was born in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire and found an affinity with cricket early on. He started playing at county level for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in 1991 while still studying at Durham University. After some time out to complete his degree, Snape stayed with the club until 1999, when he moved to Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Here, he played a role in the club’s treble-winning season of 2000 and their double-winning result the following year.
Snape received his first call up for the English One Day International team in 2001, where he played Zimbabwe and subsequently took the man of the match title. He continued his international career alongside county cricket and was capped a further nine times.
Snape moved to Leicestershire County Cricket Club and was part of the team that won the 2004 Twenty20 Cup. Pursuing sports psychology on the side, he completed his master’s degree and founded Sporting Edge consultancy. The company uses team strategies from sport and applies them to business scenarios to overcome challenges.
During the Cricket World Cup in 2007, Snape worked with the England squad as a psychologist, where he was able to draw on his years of experience in elite level sport. He retired from county cricket in 2008 to focus on his passion for sports psychology. Snape is now one of the most well-known sports psychologists through his work with England Rugby, England cricket, and the League Managers Association.
